What is the purpose of an anti-reflective coating in JAXY binoculars?
A
Binoculars contains multiple groups of lenses, and each lens group has two reflective surfaces. Without an anti-reflective coating, at least 50% of the light would be lost to reflection at the lens surfaces.
The most traditional anti-reflective coating is a single-layer film, which reflects blue light and is commonly referred to as a
blue film. Multi-layer anti-reflective coatings are better at reducing reflections and typically reflect green light, hence the name
green film.
Some manufacturers exploit this feature to produce low-cost single-layer green antireflective coatings for decorative purposes, which are commonly referred to as decorative films. However, these coatings do not benefit image quality and may even be detrimental.
The key is not the color of the coating but whether the reflected light is minimal. The weaker the reflected light, the lower the reflection, and the better the anti-reflective effect.
