In our JAXY Binoculars,If you observe carefully, you will notice that the objective lenses of binoculars often display various colors, such as red, blue, green, yellow, purple, and so on. These are what we commonly refer to as "coatings." So, what are the functions of lens coatings?

The purpose of lens coatings is to prevent the diffuse reflection of light on the lens surface, which can cause a hazy, whitish appearance. By reducing reflections, coatings increase the light transmission rate, enhance color contrast and vividness, and improve the overall viewing experience. Generally, the more layers of coating, the deeper and thicker they are, the better the viewing effect and the higher the brightness. The color of the coating depends on the optical material and design requirements. The lighter the coating, the less reflection is better. The most commonly used coatings are blue and red. Blue coating is a traditional type, while red coating emerged in the first half of the last century.

Many people believe that red coatings are superior to blue ones. Nowadays, there are many telescopes with strong, shiny red coatings on the market. Some dealers refer to this coating as "infrared," "sub-infrared," or "ruby coating," and claim that it is an all-weather, night-vision infrared telescope. Please do not be deceived by such claims. True infrared night-vision devices use phototube imaging, which is completely different in structure and principle from binoculars. They cannot be used during the day and require a power source to function.

In fact, when light passes through glass, some reflection is inevitable, which reduces brightness. After applying a red coating, the brightness is further reduced due to increased reflection. These types of binoculars are typically used in situations where the sun's glare on snow is extremely bright and the brightness needs to be reduced. Under normal circumstances, a blue coating is more effective (many well-known camera and camcorder lenses use blue coatings for this reason).
